The Uniform Health Care Decisions Act and Guardianship Practice: Key Impacts and Best Practices
This webinar will provide professional guardians with an overview of the Uniform Health Care Decisions Act (UHCDA) and its relevance to guardianship practice. The session will explain the purpose and key provisions of the Act, why it was developed, and how it addresses advance directives, surrogate decision-making, and the authority of guardians regarding health care decisions.
Participants will learn how the UHCDA may impact their role when supporting individuals who cannot make or communicate medical decisions, as well as best practices for honoring the individual’s preferences, collaborating with health care providers, and navigating complex medical decision-making. The webinar will help guardians identify ways to promote informed, person-centered health care decisions
Intended Audience: Professional Guardians. It may also benefit attorneys, case managers, social workers, and other professionals involved in guardianship or surrogate decision-making who support individuals with diminished decision-making capacity and participate in health care decision processes.

Nina Kohn is a law professor who has helped to create “gold standard” legislation on some of the most important issues facing older adults and individuals with cognitive disabilities. Kohn has been selected not once, but twice, to serve as a reporter for the ULC. The first act she worked on with the ULC was the Uniform Guardianship, Conservatorship and Other Protective Arrangements Act (UGCOPPA). The second act was the Uniform Health-Care Decision Act (UHCDA), a model law governing advance directives and healthcare decision-making for patients without surrogates.
